Quick answer

Measure before you buy

  1. Measure the glass width and height for film.
  2. Measure the inside of the window recess at top, middle and bottom for a tension rod — use the smallest figure.
  3. For curtains, add width so panels overlap the frame edges.

Removable blackout film

Static-cling film sticks with water and peels off without adhesive. Trim it slightly larger than you think; gaps at the edges are where light gets through.

Tension rod curtains

A spring tension rod fits inside the recess without screws. Check the weight limit: heavy triple-weave curtains can make cheaper rods slip.

No-drill and temporary shades

Pleated paper or fabric shades attach with adhesive strips; suction-cup shades are popular for travel and nurseries. Both are fast but can be less neat at the edges.

Temporary panels and masks

A cut-to-size foam board or a fabric-covered panel pressed into the recess gives near-total darkness for occasional use. A contoured sleep mask is the lowest-cost backup.

Installation, residue and removal

  • Test any adhesive on a hidden corner of the frame first.
  • Remove adhesive strips slowly, pulling parallel to the wall.
  • Keep packaging instructions — some landlords ask what was used.

FAQ

Does blackout film damage windows?

Static-cling film uses no adhesive. Check the glass manufacturer's guidance for double glazing in strong sun.

How do I stop light at the curtain edges?

Choose curtains wider than the frame and mount the rod inside the recess, or combine curtains with window film.
